Ugly Architecture and Ugly Product Design

Todd Lappin of Telstar Logistics on SF's new highrise at One Rincon:

The problem isn't the scale or the height; as a friend of Progress and Industry, Telstar Logistics welcomes high-rise construction in San Francisco's downtown area. No, the problem is the exterior curtain wall designed by architects at Chicago's Solomon Cordwell Buenz. The curtain wall achieves a remarkable effect: The more finished One Rincon gets, the less interesting the building becomes. [Link]

The Intricate Makeshift Signs of Mr. Sato

"If, over the past several years, you have had the privilege of joining the 3.3 million people that pass through Tokyo's Shinjuku station each day, you may have observed the work of Mr. Sato. A construction worker by trade, Sato uses strips of adhesive tape to create elaborate makeshift signs that help people navigate the temporary chaos of ongoing renovation work at Shinjuku station. Sato's signs, which feature a peculiarly attractive gothic font, are the focus of a 15-minute documentary video put together by TrioFour, a small group of independent filmmakers. The video, which can be seen in two parts here (part 1, part 2), consists mainly of a long interview with Sato, entirely in Japanese (no subtitles), but it also shows lots of photos of his work from 2004."

Ceiling Height Linked To Scope of Thoughts

New research into consumer behavior has found a link between the height of a room's ceiling and the kind of thoughts a person will have in that room.

Researcher Joan Meyers-Levey explains: "When a person is in a space with a 10-foot ceiling, they will tend to think more freely, more abstractly. They might process more abstract connections between objects in a room, whereas a person in a room with an 8-foot ceiling will be more likely to focus on specifics."

The blog Innovations Report explains:

The authors theorized that when reasonably salient, a higher versus a lower ceiling can stimulate the concepts of freedom versus confinement, respectively. This causes people to engage in either more free-form, abstract thinking or more detail-specific thought. Thus, depending on what the task at hand requires, the consequences of the ceiling could be positive or negative.
I'm not sure I'm completely convinced. Could someone please test this on some Sims and get back to me?

Webby Awards: What's Your Favorite?

My favorite personal discovery so far in perusing the extensive awards and runners-up for the Webbys is the Ikea Dream Kitchen website, which stitches together a cycle of 360-degree views of new kitchens. There are many things that are great about this promotional vehicle, and they're all obvious, so check it out for yourself if you haven't seen it yet. Great stuff.

Nice Bug

Photo by andyket, discovered in the Public Computer Errors pool on Flickr. This is one of those interesting cases where the computer error does not just disrupt meaning, but contributes to a new one. The popup window plays the role of a geisha's fan.

It would be interesting to see wheatpaste or other graffiti simulating such glitches on non-computer-generated advertisements. Anyone seen this?
