First Colour Photograph

This rather unasuming photograp is the Tartan Ribbon: the first ever demonstration of colour photography. It was created in 1861 by James Clerk Maxwell, of whom Einstein remarked:

"[Maxwell is] ...the most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton."
